Lunchtime Film Series: The Road Taken

This compelling 1996 documentary takes a reflective journey through the lives of Black sleeping-car porters who worked on Canada’s railways from the early 1900s to the 1960s. Respected within their communities and proud of their work, these men nonetheless faced harsh working conditions and systemic barriers that prevented advancement within the railway system.

The film traces a pivotal moment in this history, when porter Lee Williams challenged discrimination by taking his case to the union in 1955. His fight helped secure the right for Black railway workers to access other positions, marking an important step toward workplace equity in Canada.

Through personal interviews, archival footage, and a rich jazz score by Joe Sealy—whose father was himself a porter—The Road Taken brings to light a powerful and often-overlooked chapter of Canadian history.
