Lunchtime Film Series: Growing Up Canadian – Family

Join us for a free screening of Growing Up Canadian: Family (46 min.) distributed by NFB Canada, a compelling documentary exploring the evolving story of Canadian family life.

Canadians of all ages share personal memories of growing up with parents, siblings, and even beloved family pets. From making underwear out of flour sacks to scrounging for coal, the film reflects on a time when many Canadian families faced hardship during the first half of the 20th century.

Set against the backdrop of a country transitioning from rural dominion to urban nation, this episode traces changes in homes, cars, neighbourhoods, and daily life. Through stories of family rituals, rules, and discipline, it highlights the dramatic cultural shifts that shaped modern Canada.

Family is part of the six-part documentary series Growing Up Canadian, which examines the myths and realities of childhood through family life, schooling, work, play, health, and media. The series honours the role of childhood and youth in defining Canada as it grew into full nationhood in the 20th century.

The screening takes place in the main gallery at Eptek Art & Culture Centre, located at 130 Heather Moyse Drive on the Summerside waterfront, next to the Harbourfront Theatre.
