Summerside Heritage Murals
Discover Summerside’s story through its vibrant outdoor mural collection, a colourful attraction that brings local history to life right on the city’s streets.
The mural program began in 1996, sparked by a partnership between the City of Summerside and Tourism PEI. The first mural—depicting the Great Fire of 1906—was commissioned for the side of the historic Fire Hall on Fitzroy Street. Its success inspired the creation of four additional murals between 1997 and 1999, each celebrating moments and themes rooted in Summerside’s past.
To mark the turn of the millennium, Summerside received funding through the Canada Millennium Partnership Program, allowing the city to add five more murals. This national initiative encouraged communities to explore their heritage, celebrate achievements, and create lasting cultural legacies.
Today, Summerside’s murals form a self-guided public art experience, inviting visitors and locals alike to stroll the city, uncover Island stories, and enjoy a creative legacy that continues to shape Summerside’s character.
