Summerside Interpretative Centre

Located inside the beautifully refurbished Summerside Armoury (built in 1911), the Summerside Interpretive Centre invites visitors to explore the people, places, and stories that shape Summerside and Prince Edward Island.

Through a digital, self-guided tour, visitors can discover six interactive exhibits that blend history with modern technology. Each exhibit stands on its own, allowing you to choose how deeply you’d like to explore and focus on what interests you most during each visit. Exhibits rotate regularly, ensuring there’s always something new to experience. The PEI Fox Museum is also located on-site, adding another layer to your visit.

A Building with a Story

The Summerside Armoury holds a prominent place in the history of Prince County. Constructed in 1911 after the local Militia lost its drill shed to fire, the building served as the region’s main recruiting centre during both World Wars and as headquarters for the Homefront effort. For more than 80 years, it also doubled as a shared space for community groups.

After the Militia relocated in 1992, the Armoury—one of the last remaining examples of its architectural design in Canada—became City property. In 2005, it welcomed the International Fox Museum, and following extensive renovations, reopened in summer 2022 as the Summerside Interpretive Centre.

Today, the Armoury has entered a new chapter—continuing its legacy as a place of gathering, learning, and storytelling, while celebrating the rich heritage and personality of Summerside.
