A Building with a Story
The Summerside Armoury holds a prominent place in the history of Prince County. Constructed in 1911 after the local Militia lost its drill shed to fire, the building served as the region’s main recruiting centre during both World Wars and as headquarters for the Homefront effort. For more than 80 years, it also doubled as a shared space for community groups.
After the Militia relocated in 1992, the Armoury—one of the last remaining examples of its architectural design in Canada—became City property. In 2005, it welcomed the International Fox Museum, and following extensive renovations, reopened in summer 2022 as the Summerside Interpretive Centre.
Today, the Armoury has entered a new chapter—continuing its legacy as a place of gathering, learning, and storytelling, while celebrating the rich heritage and personality of Summerside.
