Canadian Pipers and Pipe Tunes: On the Western Front

Experience the history of the First World War through stories, remembrance, and the powerful sound of the bagpipes in this unique live lecture and recital.

Siblings Sarah and Ryan Simpson combine history and music to explore the experiences of Canadian soldiers and pipers who served on the Western Front. Ryan will guide audiences from the outbreak of war in 1914 through some of Canada’s most significant battles, including Ypres, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Amiens.

Throughout the evening, accomplished competitive piper Sarah Simpson will perform pipe tunes connected to the people, battles, and events being explored. Some were played during the war itself, while others were composed in remembrance of those who served.

Together, the stories and music reveal the remarkable role pipers played in Canada’s war effort and how their music continues to preserve the memory of those who served more than a century later.
