Autumn. Fall. The solstice. It’s all the same thing – the ending of summer and the beginning of cozy sweaters, warm drinks, and hearty meals!
This month in Summerside, there’s lots to do, including one jam-packed weekend of seasonal fun.
Let’s talk P.E.I. Fall Flavours Festival. Running from Sept. 16 to Oct. 10, some big moments are coming to Summerside, including the 10th annual Beef N’ Blues event.
#1 Beef N’ Blues
Showcasing Island beef and local chefs, Beef N’ Blues is a ‘tour de beef.’
Held at Credit Union Place, Chef Michael Smith will serve up a full plate of fun on Friday, Sept. 17. Eight Summerside restaurants are participating in the event, each preparing a different beef dish using different cuts of the cow.
Participating restaurants include:
- Breakwater Bar & Grill
- Evermoore Brewing Co.
- Gentlemen Jim’s
- The Sunset Room
- A.D.L. Foods
- Anson’s Restaurant & Pub
- Brothers 2
- Fiveelevenwest
Throughout the evening, you’ll travel the room and experience hearty, savoury dishes full of flavour, hang with some of Summerside’s coolest chefs, enjoy good music, and even learn how to properly shuck an oyster (that’s right, Chef Michael will show you the ropes!)
The Menu:
Breakwater Bar & Grill: Jack Daniels marinated and grilled hanging tender steak with black bean and sweet potato chili.
Sunset Room: Two salt & pepper crusted teres major medallions served on a bed of roasted garlic puree with sauteed mushrooms and topped with blueberry mustard.
Ansons’s Restaurant: Chocolate spiced flat iron with onion cherry jam topped with a sour cream and chive goat cheese sauce.
Brothers 2: Maple coffee braised brisket thinly sliced topped with a tomato, sweet corn and jalapeno chutney on a house made ADL old cheddar and chive biscuit. Served with a side of hickory chips.
Fiveelevenwest: Chianti and cocoa braised beef cheeks over caramelized onion risotto.
A.D.L. Foods: Slow braised chuck flats with rosemary and port wine demi served with aligot potatoes.
Gentleman Jim’s: Marinated skirt steak served with caramelized onions and warm potato salad.
Evermore Brewing Co.: Coffee and pepper rubbed tri-tip served with warm corn & bean salad and accompanied by a mini biscuit with molasses butter.
Holman’s Ice Cream Parlour: Palate Cleanser: Pineapple Sorbet
Dessert Flavours: Double scoop of apple pie or peaches cobbler ice cream
Samuel’s Coffee House: Local specialty coffee and tea selections.
Oyster Shucking Lounge hosted by Chef Michael Smith: Come hang out with Chef Michael Smith in our Canadian Oyster Coast Lounge! Chef Michael will be shucking up delicious Cascumpec Bay and Valley Pearl oysters all night long!
#2 Island Walk Food Hike:
Next on the list of weekend adventures in Summerside is the Island Walk Food Hike on Saturday, Sept. 18. Said to be the event for “foodies that like to walk and walkers that like to eat,” the Food Hike allows you to experience the beautiful nature scapes of the Island while enjoying local eats!
Our portion of the hike starts in #TheCityByTheSea and follows along the Confederation Trail and red dirt fields (with rows of potatoes, might we add) wrapping up at the Kensington Railway Station in the Heart of P.E.I.
With flat terrain, the 13.3km hike begins at 9 a.m. Parking is available behind the Loyalist Country Inn and some limited parking at Evermoore. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. featuring a breakfast sandwich, coffee and tea, cinnamon rolls and more. Pipers from the College of Piping Celtic Performing Arts Centre will march you into the mid-way point where you can enjoy a short break outdoors and a snack of a fruit and nut bar, cider from an Island cidery, and bubble tea from one of Summerside’s popular cafes. Lunch will be served when you arrive in Kensington, and boy is it a feast! These hearty dishes will fill your cup after a mid-day jaunt through P.E.I.
Breakfast:
- Breakfast Sandwich, Coffee, and Tea from Samuel’s Coffee House
- Cinnamon Roll from Water Street Bakery
- Homemade Granola, Yogurt with Honey and Fresh Fruit from Chef Bala of Iron and Salt
Snack:
- Fruit and Nut Square from Jane and Sue’s Chocolates
- Refreshments from Riverdale Orchard Cidery (They’ll have their 2 Scots on the Trail Cider for tasting along with Scottish Highlander Biscuits)
- Three Flavours of Bubble Tea from Ann Cakes & Cafe
Lunch:
- Bil’s Buddha Bowl with mixed greens, roasted chickpeas, veggies, quinoa, with maple vinaigrette from Ship to Shore
- Butternut Squash Soup from Willow Bakery
- Famous Smoked Salmon spread or mushroom tartine, and Green Gables oysters courtesy of Chef Robert Pendergast
- Craft Beer from Evermoore Brewing Co.
- Ice Cream from Holman’s Ice Cream Parlour
Transportation from Kensington Railway back to Summerside will be available following the hike! Get your shoes laced, and don’t forget your camera, hat, sunscreen, extra layers, and water bottle! Tickets are $50.
#3 Summerside Craft Trail
Hit the trail once more on Sept. 19 for the Summerside Craft Trail. With over 60 vendors, there’s something for everyone – and begs the question, what does craft mean to you?
Island artisans, crafters, creators, and foodies will offer so much at each table located on the portion of the Confederation Trail located between Evermoore Brewing and the Loyalist Country Inn (192 Water Street). Admission is $5 for adults; kids enter for free!
Last year’s Craft Trail held many treasures and offered the perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy Summerside on a September Sunday!
#4 Fall Flavours at Summerside Restaurants
Even more exciting is from Sept. 16 to Oct. 10, several restaurants in Summerside will offer a fall-inspired menu so you can enjoy the flavours of the season (dare we say harvest?)
From Pumpkin Spice drinks to Butternut Squash soups, your tastebuds will come alive with rich foods.
Some restaurants in the city taking on autumnal vibes include Brothers 2, Samuel’s Coffee House, Fiveelevenwest, and Kool Breeze Ice Cream Barn.
Bonus – North Cape Coastal Experience
With #TheCityByTheSea marking the start of the North Cape Coastal Drive, you can plan a trip starting and ending in Summerside while enjoying the coastal scenes, back roads, and delicious eats that this region of the Island has to offer!
- Start in Summerside with Breakfast from Iron and Salt
- Grab a bevvy (drink) to go from Ann Cakes & Cafe or Samuel’s Coffee House (don’t forget a snack too)
- Take a walk on the Baywalk – the city’s 6 km boardwalk
- Hit the road again and head west into Abram’s Village and embrace the Island’s Acadian roots
- Continue west and travel along the coastline, stopping at beaches and lookouts!
- After a day of adventuring, return to Summerside for supper and craft beer at Evermoore Brewing Co. or Brothers 2!
P.S. Check out the trip planner feature available on the Fall Flavours website!
The autumn season is just beginning in Summerside, and it’s definitely one of our top four seasons! We can’t wait to see what the fall holds for #TheCityByTheSea.
