A Bit of History
The name “Slemon” honours Air Vice Marshal Roy Slemon, who officially opened the Permanent Married Quarters at the former RCAF Station Summerside in 1949. The residential area was named Slemon Park in recognition of his leadership, and following the closure of CFB Summerside in 1989, the name was adopted for the entire business park and surrounding community that developed on the former base.
Today, Summerside Airport (ICAO: CYSU | IATA: YSU) operates as a private, full-service airport located within Slemon Park. With an 8,000-foot runway, more than 300 VFR days annually, and no scheduled commercial traffic, the airport specializes in aviation training, corporate aviation, and charter services. Once a military airbase, it has successfully transitioned into a thriving aviation and business hub.
Visitors interested in the region’s aviation legacy can explore the nearby Air Force Heritage Park to learn more about Summerside’s proud military history.
